BJP behind statehood demand: D K Shivakumar

Last Updated 28 September 2018, 10:13 IST

Water Resources Minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday accused the BJP of trying to stoke separatist sentiments in north Karnataka, terming the demand for a separate statehood as “a conspiracy to reap political gains.”

“We stand for Akhanda Karnataka (united Karnataka),” he told reporters. “The BJP is trying to do it and there’s no question of we supporting it.
I condemn some people trying to reap political gains out of this. This is a progressive state and I appeal for letting it be that way,” he said.

“Whether it is budget or programmes for the poor, this government is working towards all-round development of the state,” he said, accusing the BJP of having “jaundiced eyes” over the farm loan waiver.

“They are taking out the padayatra because they can’t digest the fact that we have waived loans. Nobody becomes a farmers’ leader by wearing a green shawl,” he said, taking a jibe at BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa.
