Rains wreak havoc in North, Central, Coastal K'taka

Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorm wreaked havoc in North, Central and parts of Coastal Karnataka on Tuesday.

The downpour crippled normal life, flooded roads, bridges and low-lying areas, besides leading to traffic snarls.

As electric poles came crashing down, there was power disruption at many areas. The heavy rains brought down trees in most areas.

A man was electrocuted after thunderstorms brought down an electric pole in Haveri district.

Heavy rains, coupled with gusty winds, lashed different parts of Kodagu and Sringeri in Chikkamagaluru. The downpour uprooted trees and electric poles disrupting power supply across the district.

An autorickshaw was completely damaged after a tree fell on it at Lokavalli village, in Mudigere taluk, Chikkamagaluru district. Lightning strikes reduced electric metres to ashes at many houses at Lokavalli village.

Electric poles collapsed at Kenjige, Bidarahalli and Bharatibail villages. Traffic movement came to a standstill as a tree uprooted on Banalli road. The compound wall of old taluk office collapsed.

Trees uprooted at Bettagere, Sabeenahalli and Gutti areas affecting coffee plants. The mini bridge on NH-234 near Baggasagodu has been damaged. Water level in Hemavathi, Japavati and Chikkalla rivers rose considerably.

Gonikoppa, Ponnampet, Madikeri, Napokolu and Bhagamandala received good showers. The rains hindered preparations for Theerthodbhava at Talacauvery.

In Sringeri taluk, Menase, Kigga, Kerekatte, Addagadde, Halandooru, Kalkatte, Vidyaranyapura, Koothugodi, Thekkuru received heavy shower.

Dharwad received heavy rains, while Hubballi intermittent rains. Light drizzle started around noon and continued in the twin cities till night.

Shivamogga, Soraba, Shikaripura, Bhadravathi, Sagara, Hosanagara, Shiralakoppa received good spell of rains. Heavy rains lashed Shivamogga city for nearly an hour. Shikaripura and Bhadravathi town too received heavy rains. Power supply was disrupted at various parts of the district as trees fell on electric poles.

Parts of Belagavi district received mild to moderate rains. It rained for nearly 45 minutes at Nippani. Ghataprabh, Yamakanmaradi Mudalgi, Khanapur, M K Hubli witness drizzle. Gokak town and surrounding areas, Hukkeri, Betageri, Savalgi and few other villages received rains.

It rained heavily at Byadagi, Ranebennur, Hirekerur, Rattihalli, Shiggaon and Savanur taluks. Several areas were inundated in Haveri town, while water accumulated at bridges. It rained heavily in Hirekerur town inundating roads.
