The unseating of the BJP in Himachal Pradesh has come as a consolation for the Congress that has almost perished in Gujarat where the saffron party surpassed its rival’s record in victory.
Himachal is Congress’ first victory in a state election after losing 18 Assembly polls after winning Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan in 2018. In Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu, it rode to victory as junior partners with credit going to alliance leaders JMM and DMK.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jayantibhai Rathwa was all set to defeat Aam Aadmi Party nominee Radhika Rathwa from Pavi Jetpur seat in Chhota Udepur district.
After 16 rounds of counting of votes, Rathwa was leading by over 31,000 votes over the AAP candidate, while Leader of Opposition in outgoing Assembly Sukhram Rathwa was at the third spot.

The Congress is sending Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, senior leaders Bhupinder Hooda and Rajeev Shukla to Himachal Pradesh on Thursday with the possibility of the party getting a majority in the hill state.

Isudan Gadhvi, the Aam Aadmi Party’s CM face in Gujarat, on Thursday took an early lead over Congress party’s sitting MLA from Khambhalia, Vikram Madam, while BJP’s Mulubhai Bera was seen finishing third.
After four rounds of voting in the assembly polls, Gadhvi had polled 13,658 votes, compared to 9,889 votes polled by incumbent Madam. BJP’s Bera had picked up 5,703 votes, according to the latest update available from the Election Commission.

Its best performance in Gujarat goes back to 2002 when the party had won 127 seats in the 182-member state Assembly. This time around, exit poll predictions for the BJP winning seats range from 117 to 151. If the results come in line with the median value of these predictions, the BJP would have surpassed its own record of 2002.
As most exit poll surveys have predicted a tight contest between the incumbent BJP and the opposition Congress, with the former holding slight edge, the Thursday Assembly results in Himachal Pradesh will decide the fate of senior leaders of both states

Congress expels 30 Himachal Pradesh leaders for six years over 'anti-party activities'
TheHimachalPradesh Congress on Wednesday expelled 30 office-bearers of its Chopal block committee for anti-party activities.
The expulsions came just a day before the counting of votes for the assembly polls held last month.
Acting on a resolution passed by the block committee,HimachalPradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Pratibha Singh expelled the functionaries from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect.
For the Congress, its role as the main challenger to the BJP is at stake and Thursday’s results will show if the party’s ‘silent campaign’ has cut ice with people.
Top leaders of the party, which was projected to bag between 16 and 51 seats, were busy with Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra. The Congress bagged 77 seats in 2017.
Congress holds power only in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, both of which will go to polls in 2023, and party insiders say that any hopes for the party's revival has to start from Himachal Pradesh. It is expecting the electorate to go by the nearly four-decade old tradition of voting out the incumbent government in the hill state.
As the BJP battled anti-incumbency sentiments after 27 years of rule in Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi was the party’s trump card and the ruling party banked on 'Brand Modi' in a bid to contain the anti-incumbency factor.
Among the key issues in Gujarat campaign were unemployment, price rise, water not reaching certain pockets of the state, land acquisition for big projects and farmers not getting proper compensation for crop damage due to excess rains.

When votes get counted on Thursday for Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party will be hoping to set a few new records.
Victory in Gujarat will make it the only party other than the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to have won seven straight Assembly elections. The CPI(M), which ruled West Bengal for 34 years from 1977 to 2011, had also won seven straight elections. On the other hand, no party has won a back-to-back election in Himachal Pradesh after 1985. If the BJP manages to retain power in the hill state, that would be another record.
