<p>The deadlock between AIIMS authorities and its students — triggered after the suicide of a first-year MBBS student continues.<br /><br /></p>.<p>A meeting between representatives of undergraduate students, senior residents, BSc and PhD students, and AIIMS authorities on Tuesday could not make a headway.<br /><br />The meeting went on for several hours. Later, students marched on the campus holding candles. <br /><br />They had started a hunger strike on Monday night to press their demands. At least 600 students and residents participated in the march.<br /><br />“The AIIMS administration, represented by the director and senior officials, gave vague answers to all the 12 points of our memorandum. The meeting was a failure,” said Zeeshan, general secretary of the Students’ Union of Undergraduates.<br /><br />The main demands of the memorandum include resignation of director Dr Ramesh C Deka and dean Rani Kumar and accepting moral responsibility for the suicide of Anil Kumar Meena, who hanged himself at a hostel room on Saturday. <br /><br />Students are also demanding compensation for Meena’s family.<br /><br />“The compensation should be calculated on the basis of his expected earnings till the age of 60 after finishing the course. A faculty member must visit the family and engage them in the proceedings,” said Zeeshan.<br /><br />The memorandum has demanded a new committee comprising the director, dean, deputy director (administration) and other senior officials, along with members from the students’ union, Resident Doctors Association and Society of Young Scientists.<br /><br />“There is a grievance cell in AIIMS. We want it to work effectively,” said Zeeshan.<br />AIIMS authorities could not be contacted.<br /></p>
