Bengaluru: The contract data entry operators of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) staged a protest on Thursday demanding the civic body to rehire them.

The protesters said that it was six months since the Karnataka high court directed the civic body to rehire 274 data entry operators. But Palike is yet to follow the order.

"There is a contract between the BBMP and the Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (KEONICS) to hire the data entry operators on the contract basis. However, the contract is on an annual basis," said Mayor R Sampath Raj.

"The high court order was passed in October 2017. Many of us have not even received our salaries for several months when we were working," said Lalitamma, a worker at Malleswaram ward.

Some women employees complained said that the civic body was not considerate towards them, said Sharadamma B, chairman of BBMP Computer Operator's Forum.

The protesters called off their strike after the Mayor promised to look into the issue and call a meeting with officials.
