DU stood test of time, says VC in last convocation speech

Delhi University overcame odds to become a reputed institution, Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh said at the varsity’s 92nd convocation on Saturday.

“Any institution to be counted among country’s reputed institutions has to pass through some tests and despite all odds DU has stood the test of time,” he said in his last convocation address.

Singh’s tenure, which is coming to an end in October this year, has been mired in controversies. From rolling out the controversial Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) to being issued show cause notice by the Human Resource Development Ministry, the varsity hogged the news for numerous reasons in the past two years.

He, however, said the varsity has evolved with time and has earned a place for itself among the country’s most reputed institutions.

Over 700 students were awarded PhD degrees and 173 students were awarded medals for excellence in their respective fields. AIIMS Director M C Mishra was the chief guest at the annual ceremony.

DUTA protests
The Delhi University Teachers’ Association boycotted the convocation, alleging that the varsity failed to handle the act against the Hindu College administration with regard to cases of irregularities raised by a group of college teachers.

“The college has been thrown in a state of unrest by the Governing Body by first terminating services of two teachers and later taking action against seven teachers who had represented to the Lieutenant Governor against the corrupt practices of the Hindu College trustees,” the teachers’ body said in a statement.

One Hindu College teacher, Ratan Lal, had earlier this week written to the VC saying that he is boycotting the convocation on “moral grounds”.  “The whistle blower teachers have been punished,” he said.
