State BJP wants Modi to contest from Gujarat

The BJP on Tuesday suggested that its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi contest the Lok Sabha elections from a Gujarat constituency in addition to the Varanasi seat.

It also suggested that former deputy prime minister and party patriarch L K Advani be fielded from Gandhinagar, his original constituency.

The decision was taken during the final round of the state BJP parliamentary board meeting, which took place at the Gujarat chief minister’s residence in Gandhinagar on Tuesday. BJP spokesman Vijay Rupani said that the party’s state unit would ask the central parliamentary board to field Advani from Gandhinagar and Modi from any of the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat.

“It is the feeling of six crore Gujaratis that Modi should contest from one of these seats and the same would be conveyed to the central parliamentary board tomorrow,” Rupani said on Tuesday.

He said that while the decision to field Modi from Varanasi was strategic, the Gujarat chief minister’s development model evolved from the state and he should contest from there as well. Rupani added that both Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat would benefit from Modi’s candidature.
