The staff will be able to carry out preliminary level test in the vehicle itself which will not only save time but will have more chances of giving accurate results, said the official.

At present, the laboratory employes over six dozen scientists for six speciality areas – physics, chemistry, biology, lie-detection, documents and ballistics.

A home department official confirmed the new proposal and said: “Initially, two such vehicles will be purchased. The fleet will be increased subsequently.”

“We want at least one such vehicle in every three districts,” said the official. The estimated cost of each vehicle has been pegged at Rs 50 lakh.

At present, lifting of samples is generally done after a gap of few hours and often the crime scene is also spoilt by police.

“The police officials that usually do this job are not technically trained which leads to errors,” he said.

The Delhi government has only one forensic lab which is located in Rohini, which conducts tests on all the samples lifted from crime scenes.

The new mobile vans will share the burden of the lab which due to resource limitations has a huge number of pendency samples awaiting tests. The government recently announced building three more forensic laboratories one each in Rohini, Sheikh Sarai and Saryupur.
