<p>Over 1.23 lakh motorists were prosecuted by Delhi traffic police for speeding this year till December 15.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Traffic police say speeding along with dangerous driving and cutting across lanes are major causes towards fatal accidents. Now, 11 new speed enforcement system vehicles have been deployed at vulnerable speed-prone stretches. <br /><br />Armed with laser speed guns, night vision cameras and CCTV cameras, they will capture speeding up to 320 km/hr.<br /><br />“The fleet of Toyota Innova MUVs designed by Integra Design cost Rs 23 lakh each. They can be used 24x7 and even in poor weather conditions,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla.<br /><br />On Wednesday, they were flagged off by Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi at India Gate. The laser speed guns have a distance range between 3-1,000 metres and can record videos and take photographs. <br /><br />This will be connected to an in-built number plate reader which will automatically record a speeding vehicle’s registration number. “The vehicles have been allocated to all the 11 traffic districts,” Shukla added.Places to patrol<br /><br />They will be deployed on Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Central Spine Road near Indira Gandhi International Airport, National Highway 8, Ring Road near RK Puram, Lodhi Road, DND Flyover, Saleemgarh Bypass, National Highway 24, National Highway 1 and National Highway 10 on Rohtak Road.<br /><br />Till December 15, traffic police also prosecuted 2,31,775 motorists for dangerous driving and 4,544 motorists for lane violations.<br /><br />Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander added that speeding is a major concern for the department as collisions can result in the deaths of two-wheeler drivers and pedestrians after traffic thins late in the night.<br /><br />“The vehicles will identify and repeatedly prosecute speeding drivers which, in time, will lead to a culture of more responsible driving and culminate in the prevention of potentially fatal road accidents,” Chander said.<br /><br />Speed limits in the capital range from 50 to 70 km/hour depending on the location. Speeding attracts a fine of Rs 1,000.</p>
