Alert RPF personnel at east Delhi’s Anand Vihar railway station prevented a six-month-old child from being taken away by a man.

They noticed the 25-year-old man picking up the child sleeping on the platform on CCTV monitors and immediately alerted their colleagues.

The accused was soon nabbed and the child returned to his parents.

Accused Chandrashekhar, a resident of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, appears to be mentally unstable, a senior police officer told Deccan Herald.

However, a police team has been sent to Kanpur to check his antecedents and he is being questioned. The infant’s father Sanjay Poddar works with a private company and lives with his wife and four children at outer Delhi’s Narela.

He was going back to his native home in Patna with his family for a brief vacation and arrived at Anand Vihar railway station on May 30.

They found that the train they were to travel by was delayed and the family chose to take a quick nap on the platform.

Meanwhile, some Railway Protection Force monitoring the CCTV footage in one of the offices at the station noticed that Chandrashekhar was roaming around suspiciously near the sleeping family.

They kept an eye on the computer monitor and soon found him picking up the boy in his arms and moving away.

They immediately informed security personnel on the platform and other parts of the station. Chandrashekhar was followed and apprehended in the subway of the station.

The boy was handed over to his parents immediately.

Statements of the accused at the spot were found to be incoherent. Police suspected that he was trying to mislead them by behaving that way.

He was arrested and handed over to Railway police.

However, sustained interrogation of the accused has shown that he was mentally disturbed and likely not a kidnapper, said Sanjay Bhatia, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways)

However, they are not taking any chance and investigating if he is associated with any child-trafficking gang.
