The organs retrieved from a 42-year-old man helped save four lives recently at the AllMS and ILBS.

The multi-organ donation was possible after the patient was declared brain dead at Rockland Hospital and his family members agreed to donate his organs.

On June 23, the patient, a resident of Mehrauli, was rushed to the private hospital after he complained of severe headache.

Brain haemorrhage

“The patient suffered from severe brain haemorrhage due to aneurysm or malformation of vessels. The patient was declared brain dead the same evening,” said Dr M C Misra, Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

According to the protocol, the patient has to be declared brain stem dead twice , following which the organ donation can be initiated.

The patient was then brought to the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS.
The deceased’s heart, liver, kidneys, cornea and other tissues were retrieved.

Enlarged heart

The heart was donated to a 48-year-old man who was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

This is a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and is unable to pump blood efficiently. There was no suitable recipient for the liver donation at AIIMS.

Liver failure

The Institute of Liver and Billiary Sciences conducted the liver transplant on a 54-year-old man who was suffering from acute chronic liver failure in the early hours of June 25. While one of the kidneys was donated to a man in his mid 40s, the other was transplanted in a 54-year-old woman. The corneas have been donated to AIIMS eye banks.

“The multi-organ donation was possible due to timely intervention. This is the ninth donor this year whose family agreed to donate the organs,” said Rajeev Maikhuri, Transplant Coordinator, AIIMS.

The AIIMS was contacted by the private hospital regarding the brain dead patient, following which the hospital carried out the donor-recepient checks.

Currently, all the recipients are doing well, according to an AIIMS doctor. The donor is survived by his wife and two children.
