Mulayam calls CBI impartial

Yadav thanks the agency for ending probe against him

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which had been termed as a ‘caged parrot’ by the Supreme Court a few months back, won a rare praise from the Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday.

Mulayam, while addressing a rally at Jhansi, termed the premier investigating agency, which has come under attack from opposition parties for allegedly allowing itself to be ‘misused’ by the centre,  as ‘impartial’.

“I thank the CBI for conducting an impartial probe”, the SP supremo, against whom the agency had registered a case of disproportionate assets, said. “Myself and Akhilesh (Mulayam's son and UP chief minister) suffered for nine years while the probe against us continued...the agency tried to collect evidence against us from every source, including my relatives and friends but failed”, he said.

“Only we know about the trauma we had to undergo”, he said. He added that the CBI ultimately concluded that there was no evidence against him and Akhilesh and closed the matter. “Now I can claim that I am honest as it has been proved after an investigation”, he said.

The CBI had a few months back closed the disproportionate assets case against Mulayam and his son Akhilesh. The probe had been ordered on a PIL filed by an lawyer Vishwanath Chaturvedi.
