Academy of Medical Specialities of the Indian Medical Association has given recognition to Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre to start a fellowship programme in eight streams.

Up to 16 doctors with a minimum qualification of Doctor of Medicine will be taken for the 2012 session for one year for training in a super-specialised field. A doctor with an experience of three years would be preferred for the course. Five streams for super-specialisation in cancer surgery are head and neck, breast, gynaecology, urology and gastrointestinal. Other streams for specialisation in cancer include medical, blood and anaesthesia.

“A cancer surgeon performs all kinds of cancer operations. But if one is trained further for a year in, say breast cancer surgery, then the performance will be better for one field, said A K Dewan, medical director, RGCI.
