A 50-year-old widow was allegedly shot dead by her son-in-law at her house in outer Delhi’s Narela on Wednesday. The man was also accused of raping the victim’s younger daughter in October. He is absconding, police said on Thursday.

The victim was set to testify against the accused in the rape case, and she had also sought police protection.

Police said the accused is the husband of the victim’s elder daughter. The woman used to live with her 15-year-old daughter at Swatantra Nagar in Narela.

“It is alleged that the accused along with two of his accomplices went to the woman’s house around 9.30 pm,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Outer) Vikramjit Singh told Deccan Herald.

Shot thrice

They then thrashed the mother-daughter, and shot the victim. The woman sustained three gunshot wounds in the attack. “She was taken to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital, but was declared brought dead,” another police officer said.

Police confirmed that the minor girl had accused the culprit of raping her on October 2 over which a case was filed with Narela police station.

Raped her younger child

In her statement, the teenager told police that her brother-in-law had been forcing her and her mother to withdraw the rape case. The girl is a class 9 student in a government school in Narela.

On Wednesday, the girl claimed that the accused came to their house with his two friends. “He said he loves me. When we refused to withdraw the case, he opened fire at my mother,” she told police. As her mother collapsed, the assailants fled from the house.

The girl made a call to the police control room and neighbours had also gathered at the house when a team of local police reached there. A case of murder has been registered with Narela police station and raids are being conducted to nab the man.

“There were allegations and counter allegations in the rape due to which we had not reached a conclusion. The accused will be nabbed soon,” Singh said.

The girl also claimed that the man had threatened her and her mother with dire consequences after she filed the rape case. Her mother had sought police protection, but no action was taken over her request.
