The discounts translate into savings of Rs 20,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh for small and mid-segment cars. The savings on high-end cars go up to Rs 6 lakh.

The deals and freebies vary as dealers compete among themselves. Besides discounts, automakers are offering cashback, and giving away accessories and insurance.

Among the incentives for buyers are gold coins, low-interest loans, and cheap annual maintenance contracts. Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest passenger car maker controlling 52% of the market, has rolled out discounts ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 60,000. It is also encouraging trade-ins with attractive exchange offers.

High-end cars, impacted by the increase in cess last month, have been the worst hit after the advent of GST. Companies are trying to woo buyers back with pre-cess and pre-GST prices. Luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover are offering direct discounts of up to Rs 6 lakh.
