Transport ministry proposes owners providing nominee details during vehicle registration

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed to amend the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) to simplify the procedure of transferring a vehicle in case of death of the registered owner.

At present, the process of transferring a vehicle to a nominee in case of a registered owner's death requires complying with a number of procedures.

However, the proposed amendment will ease this process, the Ministry said in a statement.

A vehicle owner will be able to specify the nominee at the time of applying for vehicle registration. Along with this, the vehicle owner will also need to submit the nominee's proof of identification.

The draft rules will also provide for the option of adding or changing the nominee at a later stage through an online application.
