A decision was taken at the council meeting to carry out developmental works through KRIDL (Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited) as per the Chief Minister’s New Bengaluru programme using the funds sanctioned in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

However, opposition leader Padmanabha Reddy said carrying out developmental works without floating tenders is illegal. “Only the cabinet has the power to take decisions,” he added.

Manoj Kumar Meena, special commissioner, said: “It is not okay to take any new decision on policy making when the poll code is in force. It is advisable to wait till May 23.”

In this regard, Padmanabha Reddy wrote to the Election Commission: “When the election code of conduct is in place, the council has decided to carry out developmental works worth Rs 4261 crore without calling tenders. The Election Commission should not allow the council to take up other works apart from essential services like drinking water and disaster management, if any,” he wrote.
