Beware tax defaulters, drum beaters are coming

Last Updated 22 September 2011, 19:07 IST

If the owner still fails to pay the tax, the Palike shall seal the property, even if the owner happens to be the resident there.

A group of drum beaters, on Thursday, were seen beating drums in front of the property belonging to Ramachittaranjan Das on 100 feet Road in Indiranagar, HAL 2nd Stage.

Outstanding balance
The Palike decided to adopt this novel method to embarrass Das, as he has not paid tax for the past several years.

Moreover, he had ignored as many as seven notices issued to him. Das has to pay a whopping Rs 72 lakh as property tax to the BBMP since 2007-08.

Better infrastructure
“In total, property tax defaulters owe more than Rs 200 crore to the Palike. Resorting to such methods will help garner more revenue, which in turn will be ploughed back to create better civic amenities in the City,” said BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah.

The drum-beating method seems to be working, as Das has given a cheque to clear the outstanding balance.

Moreover, the Palike will adopt the method in at least 10 places in each of the eight zones in the coming week, Siddaiah added.
