The Bangalore University (BU) will soon establish a research and skill development centre for differently abled students.

The varsity already has an empowerment cell that is helping out such students in various ways, and the new centre is expected to give a boost to the programme.

“The motto of the research centre is to provide more opportunities and bigger platforms for the specially-abled. It will be help them clear academic hurdles. Focus will also be on skill development. People with disabilities are more innovative and skilled. We want to bring out those talents," BU Vice-Chancellor Venugopal K R told DH.

He has asked the empowerment cell to submit the requirements of the physically challenged, which will be addressed by the research centre. “We will form an expert committee consisting of people with PhD on the topic. This will be the first such initiative in India,” he said.

The university's empowerment cell for the differently-abled, established in 2016, is working towards ensuring basic requirements for the disabled. The new centre will offer scholarships, skill-based diploma and degree programmes, certificate programmes, placement cell etc.
