Cauvery water Stage V consulting firms finalised

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board has finalised the consultancy firms for the Cauvery Water Supply Project, Stage V.

Three Japanese companies including Oriental Consultancy Global, NJS Engineers Pvt Ltd, Black Veatch and Tata Consulting Engineers from India will be floating tenders by February or March.

The consulting firms will be responsible for the entire Stage V project work till 2026.

The project is worth about Rs 5,550 crore. The project will see the construction of seven ground level reservoirs in the periphery of the city. The reservoirs will come up in Gottigere, Kadugodi, Chokkahalli, Singapura and Lingadeverahalli. This will be the final water supply from the Cauvery basin, thus completing the total quota of 29 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet) of water per year. Karnataka was allocated 10 TMC by the tribunal some time ago.

A BWSSB engineer said, from the current supply, which is about 1,400 mld (million litres of water per day), the supply will be augmented by an additional 775 mld. When the Cauvery Water Supply Stage V will be completed and commissioned by 2022, the city will receive 2,175 mld. “The Stage V water supply is mainly for the 110 villages, where currently the infrastructure is being set up. Although a few villages are being supplied with Cauvery water that is saved from the Unaccounted For Water project (UFW), a full-fledged water supply will commence only after 2022,” the engineer added. Besides, 14 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) will be set up to make environmentally viable solutions for the lakes located in 110 villages.

About seven Intermediate Sewage Pumping Stations to the STPs will be constructed.

The engineer said, technology-wise, it would be the same as in Cauvery Stage IV and Phase II. Raw water, however, will not be drawn from open channels, and water would be pumped in phases at Thorekadanahalli (TK Halli), Tataguni and Harohalli pumping stations.
