Members of the three-member technical committee set up by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development on Saturday said the new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Dharwad would start functioning from July, 2016.

Speaking to mediapersons after inspecting the facilities at the Water & Land Management Institute (WALMI) on the outskirts of Dharwad, they said WALMI would be a transit campus of the new IIT and in a span of four years, the IIT would be shifted to its new campus coming up on a 500-acre plot at Mummigatti off Dharwad. The team consisting of IIT-Bombay Director Devang Khakhar, Prof Shivaprasad and Prof Punalkar said the HRD Ministry had set up an IIT monitoring cell at IIT-Bombay and appointed them as officers on special duty for establishment of IIT-Dharwad. IIT-Bombay would be the mentor IIT for Dharwad IIT and would be guiding the institute.

According to an official communication with the Centre, 120 students would be enrolled in IIT-Dharwad and classes would be held from July.

The team has given some suggestion to the district administration regarding setting up of library, auditorium, recreation club, hostel and classrooms at the transit campus and set May end as the deadline to handover WALMI to IIT-Dharwad.
