Interdisciplinary subjects must for PG

Last Updated 23 July 2018, 20:03 IST

The Bengaluru Central University (BCU) will roll out new courses on par with the global standards at the postgraduate level starting this academic year.

With this, it is mandatory for students to complete two interdisciplinary subjects by the end of two years PG course.

Prof S Japhet, BCU vice chancellor, told DH that the courses would equip students for the new age requirements.

“Students will study two subjects of another stream (one subject in each of the semesters) in their second and third semesters respectively. This will be termed as
open electives apart from the core and optional subjects,” he said. The BCU has also made functional English and computer skills mandatory along with their academics. In functional English, students will be trained in communication and writing skills, which is often required for progress in academics and career.

The BCU has roped in an expert committee and reframed the entire syllabus for all the streams.

“The expert committee members include the retired and working professors from the country’s reputed institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi University (DU), National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Tata Institute of Social Science and others. The committee worked on framing the syllabus will also visit the university as guest faculties,” Japhet said.

“The new syllabus also helps students to know about the job opportunities in their respective streams,” Prof Japhet added.

B’luru centred subjects

As the BCU is located in CBD of the city, the VC has decided to include at least one subject focussing Bengaluru.

“A history student will be studying a separate subject on Bengaluru’s history and a political science student will study on Bengaluru politics. Similarly, there will be some other Bengaluru focused subjects in each stream,” added the VC.
