Police have arrested a four-member gang which murdered a construction supervisor after he sacked one of them for stealing iron materials from a building site.

Mohammed Ajaz Shariff, a driver with the construction company, is alleged to have stolen iron items from a makeshift shed at the building site located near the Kaggalipura bypass in southern Bengaluru earlier this month. Nageshwar Reddy, the site supervisor, caught him red-handed and sacked him.

Shariff ganged up with three of his friends — Mohammed Pyaru, Suhail Ahmed and Ismail — to teach Reddy a lesson. On February 6, the suspects bludgeoned Reddy to death with an iron rod. They then chopped off his legs and dumped them in a nearby manhole. The gang put the remaining body parts in a gunny bag and dumped them near Kaggalipura Lake.

Passersby found the body the next day and called the police. Investigators not only succeeded in identifying the body but also caught Shariff along with three of his associates. Based on information provided by the gang, police retrieved Reddy's legs from the manhole, the murder weapon and the vehicle used in the murder. They also seized three tonnes of construction material stolen by the gang and sold to shops in the city.

All the four suspects have been booked for murder and theft, and remanded in judicial custody.
