The police have registered a case against residents of an apartment who manhandled and threatened two animal rights activists for feeding stray dogs at BTM Layout on Friday.

Based on a complaint filed by Nirmala Krupanandh (57), the police booked the residents under section 509 — word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, 504 — intentional insult to provoke breach of peace and 506 — criminal intimidation along with appropriate sections under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

In her complaint, Nirmala stated she and her friend Geetha, who is also a volunteer, were feeding stray dogs near Maple Suites Apartments in Dollars Colony in BTM Layout 2nd Stage. A group of residents from the apartment confronted the duo for feeding the strays.

The women tried to reason with them following which the agitated residents abused, manhandled and even threatened to kill the duo if they come back again to feed the strays.

A few residents also kicked and chased away the stray dogs and made gestures at the women warning them to go away from their area.

Shocked by the residents’ behaviour, the women approached the Mico Layout police and filed a complaint. A police officer went to the spot and conducted inquiries after which he took up a case and registered an FIR.

The police have identified the suspects and have summoned them for questioning.
