Three of the seven BWSSB employees who suffered burn injuries in a fire near Mandya will undergo plastic surgery on Monday.

The employees, injured in Thursday evening at Thorekadanahalli (TK Halli) near Malavalli in Mandya district while cutting the “breakers” located close to the transformers, suffered severe skin burns.

They include BWSSB assistant engineer Anil Kumar. There were also four operators --Anil Kumar, Nagaraju, Nandish and Bahubali; electrician Shivaprakash and contractor in-charge of one of the pumping stations Parameshwarappa.

Dr Sanjeev Lewin, medical superintendent of St John’s Medical Hospital, said the 3 patients are in critical condition.

“Four admitted in the ICU with 60%, 50% and 40% burns. They will undergo surgery on Monday.

“While one has high blood pressure and is monitored in the ICU, the others are stable and recuperating,” added the doctor.

Dr Sanjeev said monitoring the patients is crucial as they could develop infection due to the bacteria in the air.

“Though we’ve admitted them in an isolated ICU ward, it all depends on how well the patients cope and heal,” he said.

BWSSB chairman Tushar Girinath said an internal enquiry will be held to ascertain if the incident was negligence or an accident. The Board will bear the medical bills of the employees, the chairman added.
