A software engineer was found dead at his rented house under mysterious circumstances in BTM I Stage, Madiwala on Thursday.

The deceased, 25-year-old Shantanu Singh from Darjeeling, was working at an IT firm in the city for the past four years. Shantanu was living with his friend in the house, the police said.

According to the police, at around 9 pm, Shantanu’s roommate, Apratim Medhi, returned from work and opened the house. He then saw Shantanu hanging from the ceiling fan.

Apratim cut the rope in an effort to save him, but, by the time, Shantanu had died, the police said.

Apratim then informed Shantanu’s family in Darjeeling before alerting the police. Within minutes the police rushed to the spot, and shifted the body to a hospital for autopsy.

Apratim told the police that the room was locked from the inside. Apratim had opened the door with a spare key.

The police, meanwhile, said Shantanu’s hands were found tied with a rope.

Following this disclosure by the police, Shantanu’s father, Kanwar Raghavendra Kumar Singh (55), a teacher by profession, filed a complaint alleging that his son has been murdered.

Police also questioned the roommate, Apratim, and are awaiting the autopsy report to ascertain the cause of death. His phone and laptop have been taken into police custody for further investigation.

Police are also verifying Shantanu’s call records to know what could have led him to take the extreme step, if, in fact, he did hang himself.

The Madiwala police have registered a case of murder, and are investigating further.
