With ‘Justice-for-Madhu’ protest campaign gathering steam after the mysterious death of the engineering student, Madhu Pattar in Raichur, the case was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Saturday.

DG-IGP Neelmani N Raju issued an order directing the CID to take over the case. Earlier, the family of the victim met former chief minister Siddaramaiah, requesting a detailed and fair investigation into Pattar’s death. The matter was conveyed to the home minister, M B Patil, who directed the DG-IGP to initiate an independent probe.

Raichur police had arrested a 25-year-old man following the allegation from the parents of the victim that Pattar was ‘raped and burnt before she was hanged’.

Protests erupted soon after the news of the mysterious death of the engineering student spread, and intensified after the police termed the incident a suicide. They claimed to have recovered a suicide note. Victim’s friends, students, family members, relatives and neighbours staged protests accusing the local police of misleading the facts and had demanded the government to hand over the case to the CBI.
