Volvo joins hands with WSI to transplant trees

The Swedish automobile major Volvo Group has joined hands with the Bengaluru-based Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST) to develop methods to retain the existing green cover across the country especially through scientific transplantation of trees.

Observing 100-years of the evolution of silviculture, Surendra Kumar, Director, IWST said that transplantation is also an integral part of silviculture.

According to Kamal Bali, President and MD of Volvo Group India, their collective effort has enabled transplantation of more than 3000 trees in various parts of the world. “We have been assisting public sector enterprises and other major players in transplanting trees and have achieved a success rate of more than 80 percent. As many as 2,500 trees have survived in different agro-climatic conditions and this has been well documented,” Bali explained. The company has also been contributing by manufacturing equipment required for transplantation.

Bali said that in the last few years, the company has been able to achieve a cumulative reduction of Carbon Dioxide emissions from its plants and products. Sources in the Volvo Group revealed that its officials have successfully transplanted more than 100 trees in Jakkur area on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

Paving way for sustainable development Bali said that the development of infrastructure should go hand in hand with the conservation of the environment. A national conference on Silviculture has also been organized in Bengaluru from December 3rd to 5th.
