Last Updated 29 September 2010, 17:12 IST

The authorities of Cauvery Niravari Nigam had taken up replacement of one of the crest gates.

They had already replaced six gates and the work on the seventh crest gate was in progress.

On September 27, they had removed the old gate and had installed a temporary gate. In the morning, that gate crashed resulting in flow of water from the reservoir.

Senior officials of the Nigam rushed to the spot and took up repair works. A crane was summoned to lift the old gate. The flow of water was controlled.

Prasanna Kumar, chief engineer of the Nigam told Deccan Herald that many workers had been put on the job to fix the gate and the work was likely to be complete in late hours of Wednesday.

Water diverted

The water going from the dam was diverted to six ‘River anecuts’-Devaraya, Bangaradoddi, Virija, Ramaswamy and Raja Parameshwari by balancing the quantum of water being released from the dam.

In fact, the authorities are releasing around 2,200 cusec of water to those canals for irrigation purpose.

Around 6 pm, the outflow of water was restricted to 300 cusec and nearly, 80 per cent of the work was completed. All the senior officials of the Nigam including managing director, were on the spot to supervise the work.
