PM: Maintain peace and tranquility

Last Updated 30 September 2010, 18:56 IST

“My appeal to all sections of the people is to maintain peace and tranquility and to show respect for all religions and religious beliefs in the highest traditions of Indian culture,” Singh said in a statement.

Asking the people to be cautious with rumours, Singh said disruptive elements could propagate such rumours to create ill-will between communities. “Often it is only a few mischief makers who create divisions in our society. I would appeal to my countrymen to be vigilant and not let such people succeed in disrupting peace and harmony,” he said.

The correct conclusion, at this stage, was that the status quo will be maintained until the cases are taken up by the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister said adding that the High Court has directed to maintain the status quo for three months and granted permission to the aggrieved parties to appeal to the SC. “It is my hope that the response of the people of India to the judgment will be respectful, dignified and do our country proud,” he added.
