<p>A few months from now, Karnataka, the first state to sign an MoU with the Goa Electronics Ltd (GEL) for the software will have all its prisons data uploaded and e-linked. The MoU was inked on Thursday between Karnataka’s IG prisons Kuchanna Srinivasan and GEL MD B S Borkar.<br /><br />GEL, a subsidiary of the state-owned Economic Development Corporation, developed the software PRISMS in 2008 for the Goa jails. “Today, the IG prisons can view details of every prisoner in all the jails here including their criminal history, medical details, transfers, paroles and even wages they earn at work in the jail,” GEL chairman Mahendra Khandeparkar said.<br />He points out that elsewhere in India, prison records are still being manually maintained. <br />“If this software is implemented in all the states, all the prisons across the country would be on a common platform,” said Khandeparkar.<br /><br />The Goa software which bagged a national award in 2009 is expected to also be implemented in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Kerala.</p>
