5 killed, many houses damaged

Three persons drowned in Shimoga district during the heavy downpour on Sunday night. K P Nagaraj, Kotresh and Vincent of Sagar, who were travelling in a car from Hubli to Sorab, are said to have fallen into the swollen river while passing on the Dandavati bridge. The bodies are yet been traced, the police said.

The rainwater has turned Shikaripur village an island neighbouring villages also fear flood. Anavatti-Chikkakerur and Shimoga-Shikaripur roads were inundated while more than 60 houses collapsed.

The administration in Sorab taluk has been planning to shift to safer places the residents of Bennegere, Yalivala and other villages which are facing flood threat.

More than 52 houses in Shikaripur taluk alone have collapsed during the incessant rain between Sunday night and Monday afternoon, said Tahsildar Chandrashekhar.

As water level in the Bhadra reservoir  reached its maximum of 186 feet. all the four crest gates have been opened to discharge 8,300 cusec. The water level in Linganamankki reservoir rose to 1,812.30 feet with an inflow of 25,000 cusec water.

Davangere

Sahil (6) of Hiregonigere and Shantamma (65) of Belimallur in Honnali taluk died after their houses collapsed on Sunday night.

Shantamma’s husband sustained injuries and a sheep in the same village also died.
A damage to property worth Rs 20 lakh has been reported following the breach of tanks in Chinnikatte, Bidarahalli, Kyasinakoppa. Four persons have sustained injuries as the wall of a house collapsed in Komaranahalli in Harihar taluk. In Chitradurga district, nearly 76 houses were completely damaged and 69 partially damaged. An assessment of the crop loss is yet to be done.

Haveri

Three villages have been surrounded by water while 10 have been cut off from the world outside in  Haveri as nearly 10 tanks breached.

Standing crops on the 9,000 hectare have been damaged while 450 houses damaged. The district recorded 60 mm of rainfall and no casualties were reported. Bagalkot, Bijapur, Dharwad and Gadag districts also received heavy rain.

Kodagu

Rain lashed for more than four hours in all the areas across Kodagu district, except Suntikoppa.  The drains overflowed and the Abbi Falls was in full force. For Madikeri it was unprecedented as the region witnessed rain subsiding post-Ganesha festival usually.
