The text messages are usually sent after the 5th of every month to notify customers of the amount that is due to the telecom giant.  However on Friday when the messages came informing them about the billing amount for September-October, customers found an alarming increase in the amount.

Dinesh, an employee in a private company who called the Deccan Herald office stated, “My bill is usually around Rs 400 a month. I was shocked to receive a bill that said I owed nearly Rs 800.” Calls to the customers service centres were in vain as the subscribers claim that they could not get through the lines.

When contacted, BSNL officials admitted that a technical snag in the billing server had resulted in increased amount on all the bills. “We are taking corrective measures immediately. We will send fresh messages about the correct amount,” said  an official.
