No curfew in Srinagar despite separatist shutdown

Last Updated 09 October 2010, 05:41 IST

"No curfew or restrictions have been imposed anywhere in Srinagar city or in any other town of the Kashmir Valley," a senior police officer said here.

"Curfew has, however, been imposed in Palhalan and Delina villages of Baramulla district as a precautionary measure," he added.

The hardline separatist Hurriyat group headed by Syed Ali Geelani has asked people to observe a complete Valley wide protest shutdown Saturday.

Shops and other business establishments remained closed in Srinagar and public transport went off roads in response to the shutdown call. But private vehicles plied on the uptown roads and in many areas of Old City in Srinagar that has been the epicentre of violence during the last four months of unrest in the Valley in which 109 people have lost their lives.

“Things are gradually moving towards normalcy,” another police officer said here.
