In an emergency meeting of officials convened by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel at the DC’s Office here on Friday, MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash said the accumulation of silt in rivermouths causes artificial flooding during rainy season. Hence “the government should take initiative to carry out dredging work in rivermouths to solve the problem.”

Vijayaprakash pointed out that the artificial flood situation is being created since people block most of the major natural drains while constructing houses and other structures. “We have asked the NITK Surathkal to conduct a survey to ascertain the total number of natural drains in the City,” he added.

Vijayaprakash said that the disaster management team visited all flood affected spots and extended help to families at Kodikal, Sulthan Batheri, Bolur, Bhagavati Nagar, Jeppinamogaru, Alake, Chokkabettu and Bunder,” he explained.

‘Clear blocks’

MP Kateel warned the officials of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to clear all blocks at Kulur and Kannur. “Places near Kulur and Kannur face artificial flood situation due to the unscientific road works,” he said and asked them to carry out works immediately.

MLA N Yogish Bhat directed the officials of the MCC to vacate all encroachments which blocks the drainages in City. “Action should be initiated against those who block the drainages,” he added.

‘Dial 1077’

Additional Deputy Commissioner Prabhakar Sharma said that citizens can dial toll-free number 1077, if they have any problems related rain havoc.

Vijayaprakash said that the disaster management team in the MCC is ready to rush to spots any time. People can dial 2220306 or 2220344 to avail help, he added.
