BBMP proposes to shift landfill site

Last Updated 28 June 2009, 19:31 IST

The BBMP, the district administration and the KCDC have taken up measures to fence the area earmarked for the garbage disposal to check encroachment. “People living in the vicinity of the dumping yard were complaining of foul smell and demanded to shift the yard. Now we have chosen Boggaguddahalli, somewhere near Devanahalli, to shift the KCDC unit,” said a BBMP official.

Manure for parks

The Palike plans to use the landfill site for dumping dry leaves and tree branches that fall often on the roads in the City. It has been planned to install a cutting machine to chop the leaves and branches. The mixture would be converted into manure for use at the parks and gardens in the City and for the benefit of farmers, the official said.

Two trucks will be hired to transport leaves and branches to the Bommanahalli site and tenders will soon be called in this regard. Sources added that the BBMP plans to acquire land at three more places including a place near Anekal.

There has been a mounting demand for separate place to dump garbage on the outskirts of the City as several dumpyards have been encroached upon by the landsharks. The BBMP is now planning to set up dumpyards on the outskirts of the City with heightened vigil against encroachment. A special mechanism to monitor the movement of vehicles engaged for garbage dumping, is also in the anvil.
