It may be mentioned here that this issue had triggered heated debate in earlier two meetings of the City Municipal Council recently.

On Saturday, the CMC authorities awarded contract to three agencies through package system.  Out of the total 35 wards, three agencies were given ten wards each and the CMC kept five wards.

They have to clean important places like market, thoroughfares, temple street and parks. The CMC used to spend Rs 7,83,384 every month on cleaning works in all the wards.

While Venkatesh of Bangalore bagged the contract of Ward number one to ten for Rs 2,85,999 every month, , R S Enterprises of Mysore got contract for ward number 11 to 20 for Rs 2,49,786 and R SHankar Reddy of Bangalore got contract of Ward number 21 to 30 for Rs 4,47,599.

The pourakarmikas of CMC clean ward number 31 to 35. Two tractors will be given for each contractor to shift the garbage.

Chief Health Officer of CMC Stephan Prakash told reporters that the decision to award contract for cleaning was given to private agencies following complaints from citizens regarding non-disposal of waste in all wards.

Since last one week, the contractors are personally supervising cleaning works which is being appreciated by citizens. They started their work officially on Saturday.

City Municipal Council President Rangaswamy inaugurated the new system by formally cleaning a road. He also distributed the uniforms to pourakarmikas.

Co-operation sought

Meanwhile, the CMC officials have appealed residents to give co-operation for pourakarmikas and not litter streets.  Henceforth, they should put the garbage in the bins provided by the CMC at important places spread across the city. In all, 60 bins have been provided and another 60 will be provided soon. Residents can call 268276 in case of any complaints regarding non-disposal of garbage.
