According to the BBMP officials, the BARC engineers have more experience in handling garbage disposal projects and provide valuable inputs for installation of converters.
“The BARC has already setup these converters in Mumbai. We will be able to approach them for technical expertise once tenders are floated,” an official said.

Installation of 124 garbage converters for the 198 wards in the City are on cards with the ever-rising garbage piles. The proposal will be taken up by the Palike at its meeting to be held later this week.

An official said that the proposal to install one convertor for every three wards was likely to be approved.

While 30 packages being formulated for the garbage contracts, it is also learnt that the Palike in the near future would float three tenders for garbage disposal.

Extra earnings

“The three tenders will be inter-linked. Firstly, the garbage collectors will segregate the waste into wet and dry. The wet waste will be transported to the convertor to produce manure. Palike will get a share in the sale proceeds. The contractor will then transport the dry waste to the dumping yards or the land fills where the scrap metal along with plastic will be sold to the contractor (mostly standard rate) who has taken up the project to recycle the material, providing extra earning to the Palike,” said a BBMP official.

A contractor can apply only for three-four packages out of the 30 on offer. The condition has been incorporated to check the mafia, an official said.
