MSMEs geared to drive IT growth

In a plenary session on “MSME’s, the growth drivers for Indian IT” organised as part of the 13th edition of Bangalore IT. biz 2010, Department Information Technology Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma said, “Most of the MSMEs, especially export oriented companies, are adopting IT in a big way. MSMEs account for 8 per cent of the country’s GDP.”

Expressing the same views on sectoral growth, Software Technology Park of India Director General Dr Omkar Rai said, “The government of India, especially the Ministry of MSME, is coming out with various initiatives for the growth of MSME sector in the country. The ministry is also planning various schemes for providing support for technological upgradation.

We also need a specific policy for MSMEs in this regard.” Even though the sector is ready for IT adoption, small and medium enterprises still face huge challenges to carry it forward.

According to Rai, the major challenges include the availability of affordable IT infrastructure and innovative technology. According to experts, MSME units specialised in automobile, chemical productions, textile industry adopt IT mainly for HR management, customer relationship management, capital intensified work, etc.
