Garhwal shock for Sporting

Last Updated 28 October 2010, 17:19 IST

Garhwal made the best of the opportunities that came their way at the Ambedkar Stadium and they can now hope for a semifinal berth in the third-oldest tournament of the world.

Garhwal striker Ashish Pandey broke through the Sporting defence and gave the Delhiites the lead in the eighth minute after he scored from a perfect cross.  With just six minutes left for the final whistle, Garhwal doubled their lead from a counter-attack after captain Gangamlung Kamei controlles Rawat’s cross inside the box and chipped it over goalkeeper Felix D’Souza.

Sporting pulled one back in the last minute with Mackroy Peixoto scoring from a goalmouth meele.

In another match, Goan club Salgaocar earned a 3-1 win over Mumbai outfit Air India. Neither of the two teams showed any intention to score in a lacklustre first half that ended goalless.
