He was speaking after inaugurating the Congress workers’ seminar at Nandi village in the taluk.

“The new project will provide relief to Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Tumkur and Bangalore Rural districts,” Moily said.

A committee of senior engineers has approved the new water project. Measures will be taken to bring the project into force as soon as the Central and the State Governments approve of the grants to be provided, he said. He explained that people can use the water provided through this project not only for drinking, but also other purposes.

Developing the district

Efforts would soon be undertaken to improve the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Moily said. The Union Minister also promised that the Centre would soon implement projects to desilt tanks and improve groundwater resources.

“Several projects will be implemented in Chikkaballapur district. Special importance will be given to Muddenahalli, the birthplace of Sir M Visvesvaraya,” he said. A prestigious technological university, Symbiosis Society and National Training Institute will be started in Muddenahalli. Moily assured that facilities will be made to provide employment opportunities to all the people in the district.

Ahara Brindavana, a food park, was envisaged to provide marketing access to fruit farmers, he explained.

Visiting constituency

“I intend to visit taluk centres as well as the little villages in order to understand the problems of the people. It is my aim to meet the people of my constituency, discuss matters with them and try to solve the problems,” Veerappa Moily said.

Bagepalli legislator N Sampangi welcomed the minister’s announcement on the water project.

“Although there have been constant protests demanding permanent water supply facilities, no step was taken so far. Residents in more than 300 villages of Bagepalli taluk consume water with high flouride content, resulting in illnesses like deformation of limbs in children,” he said.

Join Congress

Some JD(S) and BJP members joined the Congress party in the presence of Moily.
Congress district unit president Aanjanappa, farmers’ association leader Yaluvalli N Ramesh, Kisan Sabha leader Narayanaswamy, Congress Block president Krishnamurthy, Congress Nandi Block vice-president Muniswamy, Bharat Seva Dal district unit president M Prakash, village leaders Gopala Reddy, Jagadish, Subbarayappa, Nandi Gram Panchayat president Nani and others were present at the seminar.
