How to blend trend with comfort? This question can be best answered by the management students of City College, Jayanagar, who are expected to sport formal dress and observe discipline on campus. Smart future managers that they are studying to be, they have found an ideal solution. While the girls choose to wear cotton salwars with push-up pants to look formal, the boys prefer casual T-shirts and jeans. “Once we are out of college, we will hardly get a chance to wear casuals in our professional life. So, we didn’t want to miss an opportunity to wear what we like,” says Mahendra.

However, the girls have a different opinion on dress code. “On Thursdays, we come in uniform. On other days, we are free to wear what we like. But we feel jeans and Western dresses are not formal, hence not suitable for management students. To stand apart from others, we wear salwars with push-up pants, especially the cotton ones,” says Bhagyalaxmi, one of the students.

The girls support their choice of clothes with ample reasons. “Salwars are not only comfortable, they also give infinite opportunities when it comes to accessorising. One can try various hairstyles, footwear and add-on clothes. We normally use neck pieces according to the neckline of the dress we are wearing. As per the designs and works on the fabric, we decide whether to wear pearls, crystal, beads, terracotta or metals. However, bangles are not preferred as they cause disturbance while writing. We wear a bracelet instead,” says Anjali, another student.

More than girls, boys are particular about sporting fashion outfits. There are many copycats who imitate celebrities in terms of hairstyle and dressing. One common thing among boys is an inch-long beard on chin which is popular as ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ beard. Ashwin, an MBA student who admits that he copies Sanjay Dutt’s hairstyle says, “Boys  really experiment with a lot of things. For them, the meaning of fashion changes very often. Normally, oversized watches, canvas shoes, metal anklets are the common accessories which we try with simple round neck T-shirts, checkshirts and normal jeans.” Mahendra, another student says, now that the winter is approaching the boys will  update their wardrobe with cool jackets. “We cannot do without the jackets in winter.  Especially, the jackets with hood are in vogue. For those of us who ride bikes, nylon fabric jackets are a must have,” he sums up.
