The ‘people-friendly policing’ concept conceived by the Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Dr A Subramanyeshwar Rao is now functioning efficiently to check the illegal activities. Now taking this concept a step ahead, Dr Rao, plans to form youth clubs in colleges, involving the college students in policing. He said that the clubs will have members from all sections of the society irrespective of their caste, class, religion and political inclination.

“The club members will meet at least once a month and  discuss various issues related to their area. They will also organise sports and cultural programmes. Sports tournaments will be organised periodically by the clubs to bring youth together,” he explained. In addition, the clubs will also hold medical camps and legal awareness camps, he said adding that it was started in April, 2009 and currently, clubs are functioning in all the 12 Law and Order police stations in the district.

In colleges

The main aim is to form more and more youth clubs in the district, mobilising the youth power for a social cause, Dr Rao said adding, “we will make college students involve in policing by bringing them to clubs. They will be motivated through programmes in colleges to pass on information regarding any sort of illegal activities, including eve teasing, drug peddling or rowdism happening in their locality.”

“Peace and harmony can be maintained at any place if awareness is created among youth.  There was situation of turmoil when I took charge as the SP in March 2009. I could tackle the situation targeting youth and forming youth clubs to a very large extent,” he said and opined that the society will be healthy only if the youth are awakened and sensitised about various issues pertaining them.
