Last Updated 13 November 2010, 17:51 IST

Speaking with the presspersons here on Saturday, he said that, of Rs six crore, Rs one crore will be earmarked for repairing the National Highways in the district.

As NH 17 has been handed over to the NHAI for undertaking fourlaning work from Talapady to Nantur and Surathkal to Kundapur, the Central government will not release any amount for the repair of NH 17. Hence, it has been decided to earmark Rs one crore for the National Highway. In, fact, Rs 80 lakh is available with the National Highway to repair the road.

If there was any shortage of funds, then Rs one crore will be released.  He said  Rs 50 lakh has been released to repair interior roads in the district.

The work could not be undertaken owing to the rains. The work on road repair is likely to be completed either by the end of November or by the first week of December, he added.

Day train

To a query on the partial extension of Yesvanthpur-Mangalore-Kannur train to Karwar, Kateel said that he along with D V Sadananda Gowda and Ananth Kumar Hegde has urged the Union Railway Minister and Railway Board to run day train between Mangalore-Yeshwanthpura daily. To which, the Minister has responded positively.

“We have also demanded another night train between Yashvanthpura-Mangalore, which can be extended to Udupi,” he added.

By taking various associations in to confidence, we will fight for Mangalore division, he added.

Support price

District BJP unit President Padmanbha Kottari said that in the BJP general meeting, it has been decided to urge the state government to announce support price for arecanut in December itself. Majority of arecanut crops have been destroyed owing to the heavy rains as well as fruit rot disease or ‘Kole roga.’

As paddy could not be harvested due to rain, the government will be urged to announce special package for paddy.

He said the meet has decided to strengthen the party in the rural areas keeping in mind the forthcoming Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections. Out of five taluk panchayats, BJP is already in power in four taluk panchayats in the district. We want BJP to come to power in all the five taluk panchayats, he added.

As of now BJP will not enter into alliance with any political parties in Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections, he added.

MCC to bear 50 per cent cost

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that Mangalore City Corporation will bear 50 per cent of the cost for the construction of an underpass or overbridge across railway level crossing at Jeppu near Mahakalipadpu in the city.

He was answering a query on Southern Railways Divisional Railway Manager S K Raina’s statement that the Railways will not be able to sanction funds for the underpass or overbridge at Mahakalipadu. The authorities have already conducted survey for the underpass at Mahakalipadpu, he added.
