Shakuntala frets over police 'inaction'

Last Updated 22 November 2010, 19:27 IST

In a complaint filed with the Lokayukta police, she had stated that the Basavanagudi police have not acted on her complaint which she had filed on October 14 this year against her assistant for allegedly stealing valuables worth Rs 8.5 lakh.

“I have been approaching inspector Chandrakala and her subordinates to speed up the investigation against Sumana Shenoy, who used to work as my assistant and managed to steal those items over a period on 20 days. On October 14, the very first day when I lodged the complaint, the police recovered 9 gold bangles and Rs 70,000 from her bag. I don’t know for what reason they are not arresting her to recover other items,” Shakuntala Devi said.

According to her, the staff of Basavanagudi police station tried to refrain her from filing the complaint.

“They asked me to shut my mouth by accepting nine bangles and Rs 65,000 out of Rs 70,000 recovered from Sumana. They even told me that recovery of the entire property would take a long time and I should stay away from such complications,” she said.

‘Property not returned’

She says she is yet to get back her credit and debit cards along with a pearl and two gold chains, a camera, nine costly sarees and $ 5000.

“I will be journeying abroad on November 29 and will be back after three months. I believe, the police will sleep over the matter during this (period), ” she said.

Reacting to Shakuntala Devi’s allegation, Deputy Commissioner of police ( South) Sonia Narang said that there is no delay in the investigation and two inspectors are working on it under an ACP.
