The concept of Smart Grid is first of its kind in Karnataka.

Speaking with the presspersons on the sidelines of KERC hearing on tariff hike here on Tuesday, MESCOM Managing Director Sumanth said that with the Smart grid, the load shedding of the entire feeders can be avoided.

The consumer can have the option of availing power supply at higher rate if he is willing to pay. It is particularly helpful in case of commercial consumers. The consumption recorded during this period can be billed with higher tariff with the concurrence of Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC).

He said the scheme can read all the consumer meters connected to a Data Transfer Catalogue (DTC) along with DTC meter also at every 15 minutes interval. As a result, automatic and accurate DTC energy audit report can be obtained. The loads of consumers can be controlled using existing static meters from a distance, he added.

Sumanth said the smart grid has facility to disconnect the defaulting installations remotely. It can also switch off and on street lights at pre-set times. It can also switch off street light at alternate posts at pre-set times.

Stating that Smart Grid can be used for prepaid meters, he said with this system power failure data can be obtained and monitored. The load profiles of the individual consumers can also be monitored.
