The killing comes barely a few days after a Muslim youth was brutally hacked to death while his Hindu lover was set ablaze by the latter’s family members in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnaur district.
According to reports, the 18-year-old girl, a resident of Mawaitha Kuran village in Moradabad, was having an affair with Bhoora Prajapati, also from the same village for the past few months.
The girl’s father Mustakeem had thrashed the girl after he came to know about their affair, reports said adding that her family then decided to get her married somewhere else.
The girl, however, refused to marry any other person and insisted on marrying Bhoora, police sources said. Irked over her refusal, Mustakeem strangled the girl in his house a few days ago and put her body in a room.
Bhoora, who used to meet the girl frequently in the fields, suspected some foul play after the girl failed to turn up for the past few days. He informed the police which raided the house of Mustakeem on Wednesday and recovered the body of the girl. Mustakeem, who has been arrested, has confessed that he had killed the girl. “We could not have permitted her to marry a youth from a different community as it would have brought bad name to the family,” he told the police.
Killing lovers for family’s honour is quite common in the western UP region though such incidents also take place in other parts of the state. Only a few days back, three girls, all friends, were killed by their respective family after it was revealed that they were having affairs.
