A great dancer and a good actor in the making, this lass was again seen this year in the caper Badmaash Company. With her new movie Band Baaja Baaraat all set to release, Anushka spoke to Metrolife about her role, her inspirations and the genre of romance.

Anushka had no plans to be an actor. “I was modelling and was very happy with that. But then this opportunity came along and it was very hard to say no,” she says. And she doesn’t seem to have any regrets about the decision. “Now that I am a part of this industry, I feel I am a much better actor than I ever was a model,” she adds.

Speaking about her character Shruti in Band Baaja Baaraat, she says, “Shruti is a very hardworking, ambitious and no-nonsense girl who wants to become a wedding planner.” Does she relate to the character? “Yes, I do. I am not from Delhi but I am very ambitious and I feel any girl would relate to her,” she says.

Anushka also says that this movie is the first desi romantic comedy. “There is a growing trend of romantic comedies, inspired from foreign films, in India. But in this movie, the characters are completely Indian,” she says. “You cannot have a bad time watching this film,” she adds. And how was it working with Ranveer?

“I was very comfortable working with him. I think he is a very good actor. He is also a trained actor so there were no problems as such,” she says.

How has she been choosing movies so far? “I choose movies completely based on the script. My own character should have an impact and be strong irrespective of the screenspace it gets,” she says. And what are the genres she is comfortable with? “I am still exploring what genres I want to do,” she says.

Anushka also informs that she is a film-buff. “I love films. And as an actor, it’s important for me to watch other performances. My favourite movies are Shawshank Redemption, Life is Beautiful, Dil Se, Yuva and Jab We Met,” she says.

And is there any particular person who inspires her? “No. Everybody has something to offer and I personally get easily inspired,” she says.

Does she think her dancing skills may be a hindrance in her acting career?

“I don’t think so. I think being a Bollywood actress, dance is a very big asset for me. But I think I am better actor than a dancer,” she says.
