Tusker tramples farmer to death

Last Updated 28 November 2010, 16:59 IST

The tusker was last spotted at DRG Koppal on Saturday evening and strayed into Jayanna’s field a few kilometres away on Saturday night.

Jayanna, who had recently dug a borewell to irrigate the field, and his wife Shivamma had slept in the make-shift hut he had built to guard the standing crop.

When he chased the tusker with a lit-up frond, the agitated tusker tossed him in the air with its trunk and trampled him to death in his maize field.

His death triggered a snap-stir by the residents in front of MLA Shivalingegowda, demanding initiatives to curb the menace of wild jumbos in the region.

They withdrew the protest after the legislator promised to bring it to the notice of the government.

Second incident

This is the second such incident in a short span of a few weeks. The tusker, which had come to Arasikere taluk from Tumkur, had killed a daily wager at Bucchanakoppalu of Banawar hobli recently.
