Nasscom to seek modifications in UK policy

Last Updated 02 December 2010, 14:03 IST

Welcoming the policy which has not kept a cap for intra-company employee transfers, Nasscom president Som Mittal said, "We will be making representations in some areas that are in the policy that would affect Indians going to the UK ..This policy is to be implemented in April (2011)...," he told reporters.

The UK government had imposed some more conditions for overseas software professionals like increasing minimum salary requirement that would affect an Indian company, he said.

On the domestic IT industry witnessing a 13-15 per cent growth this year, he said Nasscom would adopt a "wait and watch" attitude on the performance of IT companies in the third quarter.

"We had given a forecast of 13-15 per cent growth and we see clearly this should be higher.. we will be watching the third quarter very carefully to ensure that this trend continues..," Mittal said.

He said the domestic software industry reported USD 49.7 billion revenue last year. This year it would cross the USD 70 billion mark. "This year we had a fairly good growth in excess of USD 10 billion, so combining domestic and exports, we think this year we will cross the USD 70 billion mark. So far, we have seen the banking and financial services grow and have seen new geographies and verticals coming up...," he said.

On the leak of United States' official communication by Wikileaks, he said this incident highlights that there are people who hack and today with everything getting digitised, "we should be aware that this could have significant implications".

"We must do all that to protect data. India today does work for 70 countries..we do work for very sensitive companies having sensitive nature of work and I think it is a matter of pride for us...," he said.

Every company in India works for 10-20 very critical customers and each customer provides their security guidelines. "Today we are benefitted with security guidelines with many customers since our security processes are strong," he said.

Mittal also suggested setting up e-Courts to address cases related to cyber crime and added that they had been working with the government on introducing new guidelines and rules for the proposed IT Amendment Act.

"Government is very active and they are working with the IT Amendment Act..The guidelines and rules are being worked out and I think very soon it should be coming out...," he said.

"The next step for us is e-courts.We are working with the government and I believe there are a huge number of e-courts already coming (to address cases related to cyber crimes)...," he said.

Besides, Mittal said they have already made a representation to the government to allow IT companies set up establishments in Special Economic Zones to get tax benefits. "We are very happy that based on our representation the government has decided that any unit establishing a unit in SEZ from 2014 will be entitled to tax benefits... I am sure companies will take advantage of it...," he said.

Mittal was here to inaugurate a two day seminar on Data and Security organised by Nasscom.
